Tips for Moving to Morris County

Morris County sits in the northern portion of the Eastern Seaboard state of New Jersey, about 50 miles west of New York City. Because of its proximity to the Big Apple, many people in Morris County commute to and work in NYC, but Morris County also hosts some major companies and research centers. Residents love it for the rolling hills and gorgeous lakes that allow them to step out of the hustle and bustle of the city, yet still remain only short train ride away from the cultural capital of the U.S.

Morris County has a population of almost 500,000. People are spread throughout the county in towns including Mount Olive, Chatham, Mendham, Madison, Florham Park, and Parsippany, New Jersey. The median household income is high compared to the rest of the country. The county is known for its excellent public school system and its high percentage of green space. It is filled with county parks, walking and biking trails, historic sites, and golf courses, which makes it attractive to active individuals and families.

When moving to Morris County, NJ, there are lots of things you need to do. Moving can be an exciting time, but is inherently usually a little overwhelming. To help you with your move to Morris County, we compiled a list of things to do before and after you settle into your new home.

Update Your Address

Changing your address to your new residence is one of those tasks that can easily be forgotten, but it shouldn’t be. If you don’t update your address, you could miss important bills or other mail, or you could have complications with some of your services or utilities.

Take a few hours to make calls, fill out online address change forms, or physically visit the local branches of the businesses you need to change your address with. It will take some of your time, but it’s better than getting that food delivery service or Amazon package shipped to the wrong home. Make sure to change your address at the following businesses.

You should also update your address with your local:

  • Banks
  • Loan providers
  • Utility service providers
  • Subscription services
  • Insurance
  • Office payroll department
  • Social Security Administration
  • IRS
  • Pharmacy prescriptions

Find New Utility Services

From Wi-Fi to electricity, it’s such a great relief to have already set up the new services in your home before you even move. Don’t save this step for last, because the utility companies might need a couple of days to set up your account and your services. Take the time before the move to figure out which companies you’ll be working with for utilities.

The utilities you could potentially set up in your new home include gas, electricity, water, sewer, internet, security systems, and cable TV. Some utilities only have one available option, but others allow you to select the company with the best rates and packages for you and your family. It’s best to ask your property management company, real estate agent, previous homeowner, or landlord about which service providers they recommend. Then, plan some time to call each company and either start services at your new home or transfer them from your existing home to your new one. If it is the same company, you will have to tell them when you want to cancel your current service and start your new one.

Technicians from the different utility companies might stop by to take care of any set-up needs. You should schedule a time for an electrical technician to visit your home early on and perform an energy audit. They will inspect every room to ensure the electrical wiring is safe and up to code, and they might also find places where you are losing energy. An energy audit will give you the confidence that your home is safe and efficient.

As you set up the utilities in your new home, remember to take care of any existing charges for your current utilities. Pay any overdue utility bills and have someone from the utility companies visit your home to do a final reading of your water, gas and electric meters. Make sure to keep a copy of the meter reports.

Prepare Your Pets

Man’s best friend deserves some care during the move, too. You’ll want to update the address on your pet’s ID tag before move-in day, just in case anything happens to them during your move to Morris County, NJ. Message your current vet to see if they can send you all of your pet’s records digitally, and make sure to get any medications your pet is regularly taking prior to the move.

You’ll also want to pick a pet boarding facility, because you might need to board your pet during some part of the moving process. Search around for a veterinarian’s office close to your new home as well. It’s important to keep their contact information on hand if there is ever a pet emergency.

Know Move-In Rules for Neighborhood

Your neighborhood might have some move-in rules that you need to follow, so learn about them ahead of time. There might be some restrictions on where a moving truck can park or what hours of the day you can move in, for example. Ask your real estate agent, the previous homeowner, the homeowner’s association, or landlord well in advance of move-in day if there are any rules and regulations you need to be aware of.

Find a Storage Facility

You might need a storage facility during some part of the move-in process, so having a storage facility ready to go is a good idea. Whether you’re downgrading or looking for a place to store some of your belongings, there are plenty of storage options in Morris County, NJ.

Wow, "white glove" service is an understatement. From the initial interaction with Lukas who came to our home to provide an estimate to Mike in sales, the experience began on a very positive note. Lukas arrived with a portable office and gave us our estimate on the spot (no hidden fees or costs). Mike expedited our contract and move day within 24 hours (amazing). Next came our move day! Volodymy and his team (Alex, Leny and Juan F) arrived before the anticipated time (awesome) and they immediately got to work. The team was incredible, went beyond expectations and "impressive" does not even describe their level of service. They treated our personal items as if they were their own and even went so far as to even put our throw blankets on the couch so it was ready to be enjoyed. They prepped the walkways so nothing was left on the floors, plastic was put on the stairs, no bumps into any walls and they managed to get our huge treadmill into the office. If we could give 6 stars we would....so if you are anticipating moving....make sure you have an estimate from Lukas and absolutely request Volodymy (team lead) and his crew (see photo)! Thank you so much Team Volodymy and White Glove Moving!

We highly recommend Vladymyr and his crew! They were very efficient, clean and careful during our 4-day move. Vladymyr and his crew packed our entire home over the course of 2 days and it took 2 more days to pack the truck and move into our new home and unpack everything. Vladymyr and his crew were a true pleasure to work with and made what is typically a stressful experience that much easier. Thank you Vladymyr, Bunny and the boys!!!

Addai, Alex, and David of White Glove Moving and Storage did a great job picking up our items in Smart Cube to take to their storage facility. They notified us when they were coming and did a neat and fast job getting our items. A pleasure to deal with.
