How to Declutter Your House Before a Move

Moving into a new home is an exciting adventure, but there is a lot of work that goes into getting prepared for moving day prior to your moving help shows up. Trying to pack up your current home when there is excess garbage and clutter around can make packing even more challenging.  There are a few easy tips that you can follow to help get your home ready to move.

Throw Away

The first thing that you can do, is start by throwing all the trash around your home away. It is surprising how fast clutter, empty water bottles, and other small pieces of trash can make your home look cluttered, and make it more overwhelming to know where exactly to start. Grab a few trash bags and go around to each room in your home, pick up items that are trash and throw them away, place items that can be recycled into a separate bag. Start by clearing off desks and high traffic areas, work your way down to picking up small pieces of trash that have fallen onto the floor.

Four Boxes Method

If you are looking to completely declutter and reduce how much you’ll have to move, you’ll need to get organized. Set out four different boxes labeled: trash, recycle, donate, and keep. As you go through your stuff decide what is worth keeping, what can be donated, and what needs to be thrown out. If you can’t decide whether you should keep or get rid of items, think about the last time the item was used, and if you really need it.

Pack as You Go

As you are going through your things, items that you want to keep should be packed into boxes as you go. Clearly label the boxes as to what room the contents belong in. This will save you time cleaning and packing, as you will be ready when your moving help arrives. This will also help you to be organized when you get to your new home, as all the boxes will be clearly labeled with what room they belong in.

Have an End Goal in Sight

Packing up an entire home can be overwhelming, especially when you think that you have to pack it all at once. The key is to take it in small amounts and work on a specific area at a time. Don’t try to do everything all at once. Select a single room in your home, spend a few hours cleaning and packing it up completely before moving on to the next room. Leave high traffic areas for last, as they will get dirty and have to be recleaned in the meantime. Working on a single room at a time will give you the opportunity to go through everything and declutter without throwing everything in a box to deal with at your new home.

Pack Everything Except the Necessities

While it might be tempting to pack everything while you are on a roll, be sure to leave out the necessities. Pack the things that you often use last, along with the furniture that you’ll need. Start by packing unnecessary items, such as board games, desks, bookshelves, books, and extra furniture. As moving day approaches, start to pack up items such as clothes and kitchenware.
